ABHIGYANAM

Study on modernizing the practices of traditional knowledge system.

Traditional knowledge, indigenous knowledge and local knowledge generally refer to knowledge systems embedded in the cultural traditions of regional or local communities. Traditional knowledge includes types of knowledge about traditional technologies of subsistence (e.g. tools and techniques for hunting or agriculture), midwifery and ecological knowledge, traditional medicine, craft skills, climate and others. These kinds of knowledge, crucial for subsistence and survival, are generally based on accumulations of empirical observation and on interaction with the environment. In many cases, traditional knowledge has been orally passed oral tradition for generations from person to person. Some forms of traditional knowledge find expression in culture, stories, legends, folklore, rituals, songs, and laws.

OBJECTIVES

We started our work of survey on the most important, highlighting and interesting fact of traditional knowledge which was the practices of the same. The part which attracted us the most was the fact that the traditional knowledge unlike other forms of modern knowledge, was practiced through culture, stories, legends, folklore, rituals, songs etc. But the question we faced the most was whether our traditional knowledge is still passing through the generations in the same form which was the beginning of the same. And at this focal point we found our topic of the research work. In the beginning we met around 45 people from different walks of life including men, women, children etc.

The outcome was that in the modern days still the elderly people are trying to save their traditions with their indigenous and local knowledge but the younger ones are more relied for their knowledge not on their traditional knowledge form but the modern knowledge as a part of their regular education. Apart from that now a days the most important part of knowledge feed is in digital online form. But in our survey when ever we asked about traditional knowledge on digital platform, the most of the stack holders were blank at their faces. At last we reached to the conclusion that we can try to save our traditional knowledge by giving it a rich and vast digital and accessible online platform. That was the beginning of ABHIGYANAM

ABHIGYANAM

The concept behind ABHIGYANAM was to provide a digitized platform for the traditional knowledge giving an entirely new system for practicing the traditional, indigenous and local knowledge using the modern methodologies and platforms. In other words we could say “MODERNISING THE PRACTICES OF TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM”.
We were actually conceptualizing the thought of making available the precious traditional knowledge to all by breaking the barriers of its practices been used within the concerned local area, and making it available to all in the universe with the use of an universal platform of the modern days that is WORLD WIDE WEB.

The foremost necessity for the same was an online address for the project which we formed as below – https://abhigyanam.snair.in
Initially the language we used for the same was English for getting a wider reach but soon we understood the need of other languages to reach the core and root of the source of this precious knowledge, and ultimately we decided to translate the repository with the help of modern programing tools. In this way now its available in 108 language translations.

Material and method

We used the sampling of around 45 people of all types with the sufficient classification on the basis of gender, age etc.
The place used for the study and survey was the nearby areas in Neemuch district focusing basically the traditional knowledge of Malwa and Mewar region.
The study and survey was based on the know how of the people related to their culture, stories, legends, rituals, songs, proverbs etc.
Sampling method used by us was simple random sampling.
Data collection tool used was questionnaire and analysis was done with the help of Excel graphs.
The computer language used for the repository is HTML, java script, PHP etc.

CONCLUSION

We are successful in giving our precious traditional knowledge a new platform to be used not only as a repository for this precious knowledge system in the form of culture, stories, legends, rituals, songs, proverbs in different walks of life about traditional technologies of subsistence (e.g. tools and techniques for hunting or agriculture), midwifery and ecological knowledge, traditional medicine, craft skills, climate and others to be accessed in the concerned local language as well as a translation facility of 108 languages with the use of modern programming tools making it available to all in the universe with the use of an universal platform of the modern days that is WORLD WIDE WEB.
